Now is a good time to look at the impact that your image has on your personal and professional life. Are you getting ahead? Are you where you want to be or headed in the right direction? Your image can strongly influence your success. Whether you like it or not, people judge you almost immediately.

Although it seems shallow, your appearance comes first. That's what the first impression is based on. Once formed, it usually doesn't change. That's why it's important to find out what your image says to others about you.

Your desired image may not be what you're projecting to others. How do other people really see you? If you don't know, get a reality check. If you want to be described as competent in your job, socially skilled and with a strong character, how do your foster that impression?

As a Certified Coach and Certified Image and Branding Consultant, I know to create a positive professional image, is not just about your physical appearance. How you look, speak and carry yourself are essential. Yet, there are other traits of importance. Here are a few to pay attention to:

Acceptance:

Accept that you're responsible for the image you create. If it doesn't work for you, change it. You can do that anytime. First, you need to know how you're being perceived by others. Is the image you're projecting one that's in line with your values and your business?

You won't know how others' view you unless you ask for feedback. View feedback constructively as a way to strengthen your image and generate more personal and professional success. When you get the necessary feedback, act on it if it seems reliable. Take proactive steps to change your image immediately.

Credibility:

Being authentic and genuine are traits that foster a good impression. If you're considered credible, people will believe they can trust you with their business and friendship. Do you do what you say you're going to do or accomplish?

Empty words won't get you the job, project or relationship you want. Follow-through will. People want to know they can count on you. Credibility goes a long way in establishing long-term relationships and referrals.

Commitment:

Are you committed to your work, your team and your company? Are you a person known to get the job done in spite of setbacks and glitches? People know when you care. You're earnest and dedicated to them and to the task at hand. Do what you can to foster that belief in you. They want to know you genuinely care for them, the job and for yourself.

Capability:

Do you have what it takes: Know-how, expertise and the right knowledge for your industry or business? Stay informed about the latest trends and methods to keep you competitive and current. Don't lag behind because you're not up-to date. Do the necessary research and be results-oriented. You won't be disappointed.

Let people know you value them, their business or friendship. Build strong relationships by being the person who views every relationship with importance and value.
