Finding Keyword Phrases: How to Find And Choose Effective Keyword Phrases for Search Engines (SEO)

The information age is here, welcome to the 21st century (decade 2). Think back to the late 1990's and how we used to search for something on the internet by typing one or two keywords as your search term as this was how the search engines were used; using a straight forward 'word search' form of indexing.

Compare this with today's method of searching and habits have completely changed as we now use keyword phrases for a more natural way to find information and that search engines have improved using more complex and sophisticated algorithms.

If you typed a single word in a browser for example "Computer", what are you looking for? computer hardware, software, training, accessories etc? You will end up with over 3.3 billion search results with a mix of different aspects of this one keyword. Next, type in "Computer Software" and it will narrow to around 420 million results but it still doesn't pin point the exact requirement as say you were looking for "How to use an Excel Spreadsheet" which is a more natural keyword phrase to a specific target of information.

Finding keyword phrases for your website is going to be critical in order to attract more visitors and increase potential sales. Therefore, you do not need to worry about placing single keywords in your content but focus on the natural phrases instead and the search engines will take over.

There are several places where your keyword phrases need to go;

1. Title - Not just having a compelling title for your article or blog post but placing a keyword phrase here is going to get the attention of a search engine.

2. Keywords & Tags - Most blog posts and other documents use meta tags where you can place keyword and keyword phrases and is probably the only place where one or two (broad) keywords are used as they are normally hidden or not the emphasis of your webpage content.

3. URL - That's the web address you type in the address bar and is the reason why your domain name should include (if possible) a keyword phrase that is deemed strong and relevant to your niche.

4. Heading Tags - Within your content page or blog post, using the heading tags (H1, H2 and H3) will help the search engines pick up on keyword phrases.

How you find good keywords is also an art form and I will cover this is more detail in an other article. Keep an eye out for it.

Another Tip for you! Using hypertext links on your website with good keywords will help to rank your website too and the more you have higher ranked links going to your website (from external sources) the better credibility and score a search engine will award.
