Summer is a sensible time to carry out annual routine maintenance on central heating systems to ensure it is ready for when the weather turns colder.

The summer holiday period could be the most appropriate time in a large public or business building because a proportion of the staff is likely to be on holiday and depending on the nature of the business there may be a slowdown in its activity during this period.

This would mean that scheduling such maintenance tasks as ductwork cleaning would be more convenient at this time than later in the year and would ensure that it has been checked and any minor repairs have been taken care of before the system is actually needed.

There are several reasons why dust and bacteria collecting in air ducts can be a problem. Clogged up ductwork and filters mean that the system does not run as efficiently as it could and this can increase the costs of overheads, particularly the energy bills. While energy prices continue to rise this can have a serious effect on the company's overheads and its profitability.

Health health and safety requirements, however, mean companies should ensure that the working environment is comfortable for employees and other users of their buildings and this means that using the heating system and the costs of the energy needed for running them cannot be avoided.

The health issue is also important. Ductwork can often serve multiple purposes and this can include ensuring a constant supply of clean air. It is particularly important if the activities carried out in the building include the need to extract substances that can be dangerous to human health but also to ensure the company has done as much as it reasonably can to minimise anything that can cause discomfort to allergy or asthma sufferers.

There are cost implications here too, which can include lost working days by employees or even claims against the company if a person's health has been severely compromised and the company has not paid proper attention to health and safety.

Professional duct cleaning companies have the experience, equipment and health and safety training to ensure any air duct cleaning is carried out thoroughly and safely.

They will work in co-operation with the building's facilities manager both before the work is to be carried out to check the system and report on any maintenance and repairs that may be needed as part of the cleaning and will normally try to schedule the work at times when it will not get in the way of a busy business day.
